Email Here Eligibility VSTP Program is recruiting 3 candidates for next year funding. The funding cycle is May 1, 2026- April 30, 2027. You are eligible to apply if you can answer yes to below questions, If you meet these eligibility criteria, we encourage you to consider this unique opportunity. Are you a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident? Are you entering your second or third year in a Ph.D. program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI)? You are not currently receiving support from another institutional training grant, with an exception for the Medical Scientist Training Grant? How to Apply To apply, please email the following materials by the February 1, 2026 deadline. Documentation of US citizenship or permanent resident (green card) status. A one-page description of the thesis research project that will be supported by the training grant. This should include the project background, operating hypotheses, specific aims and any preliminary results. Current copies of student and PI mentor NIH biosketches. “Other Support” documents for both the student and PI mentor. Include any previous or pending fellowship support (individual or institutional training grants) Copies of official transcripts from undergraduate and masters degree (if applicable) programs. A copy of the student’s current transcript as a Ph.D. student at UCI should also be included. A list of publications, including published original research articles and review articles, and draft manuscripts that are soon to be submitted. Published abstracts from presentations at national/international meetings should also be included but must clearly be designated as abstracts. A two-paragraph statement from the PI mentor describing 1) the student’s progress and potential to complete their PhD requirements and 2) the PI’s approach to Ph.D. mentorship, involvement in vision science-related research activities and current funding from the NEI, and previous experience as a Ph.D. student mentor. All applications will be reviewed and ranked by the VSTP Steering Committee.
