The overarching goal of this affiliation is to launch the careers of the next generation of scientists who will tackle some of the most important questions facing humankind. These programs have a strong emphasis on teaching students how to conduct state-of-the-art research in a rigorous manner while at the same time providing them with the soft skills that will help them be successful throughout their careers.

Cellular & Molecular Biosciences Program

This Program in Cellular & Molecular Biosciences (CMB) at UC Irvine provides ideal training to launch the careers of talented researchers in diverse fields of biomedicine. With a multicultural student cohort, we strive to fulfill the dreams of students from many different backgrounds. The training environment is rigorous, but also cognizant of the need in life for a supportive and balanced lifestyle. CMB is an interdisciplinary program with six participating departments from two Schools, the UCI School of Medicine and UCI School of Biological Sciences.

Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program

The field of Neuroscience is an inherently broad and multidisciplinary area of scientific pursuit and scholarship. The substantial breadth of neuroscience is one of its strengths as a discipline, and one of the features that makes it an attractive and important area for graduate study. INP students benefit from an integrated exposure to the Neurosciences at UCI initially, followed by an informed entry into one of several departmental programs. In effect, this allows a student’s training to have a degree of breadth early on that would be difficult to achieve in any departmental program, followed by a degree of specialization later on that would be difficult to achieve in a multi-year large pan-departmental program.

Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Departmental Grad Program

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (MBB) delves into the secrets of the body at the molecular level, researching mechanisms underlying all fundamental biological processes. MBB students learn from experts in such varied fields as biochemistry, immunology, structural biology and virology. As our researchers continue to advance knowledge about the body, they continue to find vital information related to autoimmune diseases, cancer, drug design, vascular biology and much more.

Physiology and Biophysics departmental grad program

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics provides numerous opportunities for graduate students. Opportunities exist for students in a variety of other graduate programs at UC Irvine, since many of our faculty members hold joint appointments in departments ranging from: • Chemistry • Biomedical Engineering • Chemical Engineering and Materials Science • Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program • Medicine • Ophthalmology • Pediatrics • Cancer

Medical Scientist Training Program

The purpose of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is to train individuals who can understand and contribute to advances in research, and can also apply those advances to the field of medical care. Since our first students entered the program in 1980, the UCI Medical Scientist Training Program has grown and flourished. Today, our students and associated faculty pursue research in fields such as stem cell biology, cancer biochemistry, human brain mapping, among others.

The goal of UCI's program in Mathematical, Computational and Systems Biology (MCSB) is to provide students from a variety of educational backgrounds with Ph.D. training suitable for research careers in the nascent field of Systems Biology. The program emphasizes in-depth classroom study, interdisciplinary research rotations, and individualized advising.
