The Center for Translational Vision Research Distinguished Speaker Series, also known as "Friday Seminars" showcases innovative research across the world. Yiannis Koutalos, PhD is a distinguished researcher in the field of visual neuroscience and retinal physiology, with a particular emphasis on the visual cycle, photoreceptor biochemistry, and mechanisms of retinal degeneration. He is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Koutalos has contributed seminal insights to understanding the biochemistry of phototransduction — including how retinoids are processed in rod and cone photoreceptors, and how metabolic byproducts accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelium. His work on fluorescence imaging, the reduction of all-trans retinal, and the kinetics of pigment regeneration has advanced both theoretical models and experimental techniques. Over his career, Dr. Koutalos has published extensively in biochemistry, biophysics, and vision science journals, exploring topics ranging from calcium diffusion in photoreceptors to the roles of photoproduct decay in visual adaptation. In his role at MUSC, Dr. Koutalos mentors graduate students and postdocs, contributes to the vision and ophthalmology research community, and collaborates on translational projects aimed at preserving or restoring visual function.
