The Center for Translational Vision Research Distinguished Speaker Series, also known as "Friday Seminars" showcases innovative research across the world. The seminar series has now been expanded to include lectures by experts on topics ranging from Ophthalmology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Neurobiology, Imaging, Computational Sciences to Novel Ophthalmic Treatments.

Dr. Robert N. Weinreb is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego, where he also serves as Director of the Shiley Eye Institute and the Hamilton Glaucoma Center. He holds the Morris Gleich, M.D. Chair of Glaucoma and is a Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering, as well as founding faculty of UC San Diego’s Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute. Dr. Weinreb’s research centers on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of glaucoma—a leading cause of blindness worldwide. His work integrates clinical, imaging, and bioengineering approaches to understand optic nerve damage, improve early detection, and develop novel therapeutic strategies including neuroprotection and targeted drug delivery. With over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, he holds the highest h-index in glaucoma research globally. In addition to his academic leadership, Dr. Weinreb has trained over 170 research and clinical fellows, many of whom now lead programs worldwide. He is a past president of several major professional societies, including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), World Glaucoma Association (WGA), and American Glaucoma Society (AGS). Among his many honors, he was awarded the 2023 WGA Laureate Award for lifetime achievement in glaucoma research and care.
