Dr. Lu Chen, M.D., Ph.D., FARVO, is a Professor of Vision Science and Optometry in the Vision Science Graduate Program at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry and a member of the Center for Eye Disease & Development. With training as both a physician and a scientist, her work bridges clinical ophthalmology and basic vision research, focusing on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate ocular blood and lymphatic vessels. Dr. Chen’s research has made significant contributions to understanding ocular lymphatic biology, including the development and function of lymphatic pathways in the cornea, conjunctiva, and Schlemm’s canal. Her laboratory examines how vascular and immune systems interact to influence inflammation, fluid homeostasis, and glaucoma, with implications for corneal disease and transplant rejection. Using genetic, molecular, and advanced imaging approaches, her work aims to identify new biological targets for therapies that protect and preserve vision.
