The Center for Translational Vision Research Distinguished Speaker Series, also known as "Friday Seminars" showcases innovative research across the world. The seminar series has now been expanded to include lectures by experts on topics ranging from Ophthalmology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Neurobiology, Imaging, Computational Sciences to Novel Ophthalmic Treatments.

Dr. Yiu is a vitreoretinal surgeon and clinician-scientist at UC Davis. He earned his dual MD-PhD degrees at Harvard Medical School, underwent residency training at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, and got his fellowship training at the Duke Eye Center. He is currently involved in translational research in AMD and other retinal diseases. His focuses include gene therapy and gene editing, ocular imaging, and primate models of retinal diseases. He described the first use of CRISPR-based genome editing as a treatment strategy for wet AMD, reported the use of suprachoroidal microneedles for AAV delivery, and pioneered work to study AMD and other retinal disease models in rhesus monkeys. He has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, serves as a course lecturer at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is editor of the textbook “Vitreoretinal Disorders.” Dr. Yiu has received numerous awards including the Ronald G. Michels Foundation Fellowship Award, the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award, the Retina Society Fellowship Research Award, and the Macula Society Evangelos S. Gragoudas Award. He is supported by the National Eye Institute, BrightFocus Foundation, and Macula Society. In 2016, he was named as one of 21 “Emerging Vision Scientists” by the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research for his cutting-edge research.
