Marco Bassetto Named 2026 Beckman Scholar

We are proud to announce that Marco Bassetto, from the laboratory of Dr. Philip Kiser, has been selected as a 2026 Beckman Scholar, with his fellowship beginning in July 2026.

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Scholars Fellowship represents one of the most prestigious and competitive training programs in vision science at UC Irvine. Housed within the Brunson Center for Translational Vision Research (BCTVR) and the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, the program is designed to support exceptional scientists at a pivotal stage in their careers—providing the resources, mentorship, and collaborative environment necessary to pursue bold, high-impact research that bridges fundamental discovery and clinical application.

This year’s selection process was highly competitive, with a large and exceptionally strong pool of applicants from across leading institutions. Applications were reviewed and rigorously scored by an internationally distinguished External Advisory Board composed of global leaders in ophthalmology, genetics, neuroscience, and drug development. Marco’s selection reflects both the extraordinary caliber of candidates and his emergence as one of the most promising young scientists advancing the future of vision research.

Marco’s work is centered on advancing innovative strategies for the early detection and treatment of retinal diseases—conditions that often progress silently and are diagnosed only after irreversible vision loss has occurred. His research brings together multidisciplinary expertise in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and retinal biology to develop next-generation approaches that can identify disease earlier and enable more effective intervention.
