Ryan A. Flynn, M.D., Ph.D., is a clinician-scientist whose research has revealed new connections between RNA biology and glycobiology, with implications for understanding human disease and cellular communication. He earned his undergraduate degree from MIT in 2010 before completing his M.D. and Ph.D. at Stanford University in 2017, followed by postdoctoral training at Stanford. As an Assistant Professor at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard’s Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Dr. Flynn leads research focused on understanding how biopolymers such as RNA and glycans work together to regulate cellular processes. His laboratory studies glycoRNAs, a newly identified class of molecules that combines small noncoding RNAs with glycans, investigating their biosynthesis, trafficking, and roles in cell-cell communication and cell fate decisions. Through this work, Dr. Flynn aims to uncover fundamental mechanisms of extracellular biology and develop new insights into the molecular basis of human disease.
