Ren Ng, Ph.D., is a pioneering computer scientist whose research has advanced the fields of computational imaging, computer vision, human visual perception, and artificial intelligence. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University and currently serves as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his career, Dr. Ng has made foundational contributions to light field imaging and computational photography, including founding Lytro to commercialize his doctoral research, as well as contributing to the development of Neural Radiance Fields, or NeRF, for reconstructing three dimensional scenes from images. His research group now works at the intersection of visual computing, computational imaging, vision science, and neuroscience, with recent work focused on understanding and reprogramming human visual perception at the level of individual photoreceptors. His laboratory develops innovative technologies and computational models to investigate how the eye and brain create visual experiences, including pioneering research into color perception and the ability to produce novel visual experiences through precise stimulation of retinal photoreceptors.
