François F. Paquet-Durand, PhD, is a Professor of Retinal Neurodegeneration at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and a member of the UCL Centre for Translational Vision Research. Trained as a molecular biologist and neuroscientist, his work focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inherited retinal degenerative diseases. Dr. Paquet-Durand’s research has been instrumental in uncovering pathways of photoreceptor cell death and survival, particularly in conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa. His laboratory investigates how dysregulated signaling, metabolic stress, and neuroinflammation contribute to retinal degeneration, with the goal of identifying therapeutic strategies that slow or prevent vision loss. Using advanced molecular, genetic, and pharmacological approaches, his work aims to translate fundamental insights into neurodegeneration into effective treatments that preserve retinal function and visual capacity.
