The Brunson Center for Translational Vision Research Distinguished Speaker Series, also known as "Friday Seminars" showcases innovative research across the world. Claudio Punzo, Ph.D., is a leading vision scientist whose research focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms underlying retinal degeneration and developing new approaches to treat inherited and age-related eye diseases. He earned his PhD from the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he studied Drosophila eye development in the laboratory of Dr. Walter J. Gehring, before completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. Constance L. Cepko focused on retinal degeneration. As Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Research at UMass Chan Medical School, Dr. Punzo leads research focused on Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-related Macular Degeneration. His laboratory investigates the mechanisms driving retinal disease, with the goal of advancing our understanding of vision loss and developing improved therapeutic approaches for patients affected by degenerative eye diseases.
