Kyriacos Athanasiou, PhD is the Henry Samueli Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, UCI. Kyriacos is a bioengineer with interests in biologics and devices related to the musculoskeletal system, and he is the head of DELTAi, Driving Engineering & Life-science Translational Advances @ Irvine.
He has published over 350 papers, 360 conference proceedings, and 20 books, and he has founded or co-founded five companies. These include OsteoBiologics (biodegradable implants) and VidaCare (intraosseous infusion drug delivery systems). Recently, he formed Cartilage Inc., a startup based on intellectual property developed at UCI.
In total, he has had 15 FDA-approved products, based on his patents. He is past President of the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the immediate past Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Inventors.
